Free mind

This free educational tool is a website free of charge for students to construct concept map’s for brainstorming a topic for a project or paper.  This tool could be very useful in an English classroom where paper are written and will allow students to critically think about different ideas and topics. Also, the free technology will help save paper which in turn can teach the students about how to be green and help save this planet.

Book Builder

This free educational website is a book builder. Teachers can build books to go with their lessons and/or teachers can have students build their own books about a lesson and how they observed it. This website will also allow students to think deeper into their understanding of the lesson and how to use cognitive thinking skills to plan the book.

Doodle.com

This website is a quick, easy and most importantly free resource to create polls. This technology can be used in the classroom by have the teacher set up different questions and having the students complete the polls for nightly homework, or if the students want to vote on a testing day this website will allow that. This new technology will also work for teachers to place all of the assignments and testing days on the website so all of the students can see in a calender form.

Podcast- Science and the Sea “Smelly Fish”

This podcast discussed the sense of smell of the Damselfish. Once the Damselfish are born they float around on the surface and often float around there while they develop, however are attacked by predators in the area. Since they are vulnerable to predators they have to defend themselves and they do this through their sense of smell. Researchers have experimented on why Damselfish settle in the places that they do and when experiments were completed they discovered that the Damselfish found a place to live that were away from any predators. The researchers sensed that the Damselfish knew that there was a predator in certain area of their living space and they did not settle in that same space. The Damselfish have a well-developed sense of smell, as the researchers showed through their experiment, so it’s likely that they sniff around before they pick out a spot which keeps them safe from bad neighbors.

There were not explicit technologies discussed in this podcast however, they did have a small discussion of an experiment that was completed.

All of this information was new to me. I am not familiar with the Sea nor the creatures that inhabit it.
